Mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmas

by Chin

The artwork is a counter-argument for the harmful, misleading, and perversions of the feminist struggle in the current period. The artist wants to honor the beauty of femininity through images pf moments captured in everyday life. Transparent boxes like invisible prejudices that society is imposing on femininity, including those imposed by women on themselves.

Sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller and sometimes just so

by Quywn & Nguyen Thanh Tung
Live performance

The main subject of this performance is personal trauma, an incident in the past related to sexual harassment. Furthermore, the incident is a serious breach of social morality. Since it is a delicate issue, the artist believes the story is best expressed by body language. The name of the performance can be translated as “ Sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller, sometimes just so”, which is about the fear from the mentioned trauma. It might inflate or shrink, but never disappear. Due to the trauma, the artist was obsessed with the door in her room. She was haunted and tormented by the door itself, with the sound and silhouette of people on the other side. She couldn’t tolerate it anymore, yet she was completely helpless. Eventually, she learned to accept the trauma, keep it, reflect on it, and find a way to let it go.

Musty

by Nguyen Khoi
Acrylic on styrofoam
20 x 10 x 60 cm

Unlike human, objects have a purpose to exist before they are produced, while people are born and then begin to search for their own life purpose. A styrofoam block that has completed it’s goal of existence, a styrofoam block that protects something that values more than itself, which after completing the goal becomes garbage. The artist has reused the styrofoam block, and painted on it a new layer, it has a new purpose of existing, to tell and listen to new stories.

Through the techniques of scribbly doodling and elementary school level arts and crafts, the artist wants to portray their fractured memories of childhood. The memory fragments partly represent the artist’s lonely childhood, reflecting the gap in human-human relationships.

Ha!?!

by Chiem
Mixed media
100 x 150 x 150 cm

From contemplating about organizing his own funeral before dying, Chiem envisages a hypothetical future in 2099, projecting a personal view of a funeral for the current young generation. Votive paper made from dry leaves, pressed into small flower or star shapes; The coffin with a strange shape, decorated with colorful binary codes and candles; The tombstone is replaced by a video presentation about the death of a conversation. These peculiarities partly reflect the difference in thinking between generations as well as the rapid and continuous changes and movements of society in a century with many fluctuations. Audience-artwork interaction is encouraged. You can use the paper press available at the exhibition to press the dry leaves into flower shapes to scatter on the coffin or take home. With the candles, you can light them, make a wish or convey a message you want to hear or want to be heard, and then blow them out.

The work is the artist’s view of impermanence. Flowers must wither to bear fruit, and the artist likens human life to a plant, a translational spiral, the birth, old age, sickness, death, birth.
